How To Properly Clean A Dutch Oven?

A Dutch oven is a common cooking tool usually made of cast iron or enameled cast iron. Additionally, there are ceramic and stainless steel Dutch ovens. Dutch ovens are thick, durable and do a great job of retaining heat and heating them evenly. It is widely used in a variety of cuisines including stews, baking and toasting. I’m going to share how to clean a Dutch oven at home, I hope it helps.

How to clean an enameled cast iron Dutch oven?

Both enameled cast iron Dutch ovens and cast iron Dutch ovens are made of cast iron. But since the former has a smooth enamel surface, cleaning is relatively easy.

1 Remove the parts. If your enameled cast iron Dutch oven has removable parts (like the lid), remove them for better cleaning.

2 Clean the surface. Use a damp sponge to remove food residue from the surface of the oven. Then, rinse with warm water.

3 Clean the inside. Add dish soap to the oven filled with hot water and soak for 20 minutes. Wipe the enamel surface with a non-abrasive sponge. Finally rinse with clean water. If you have stubborn stains, use baking soda. Apply a paste of baking soda and water to the stain and let it sit overnight. Wash again with dish soap the next day.

4 Dry. Use a microfiber cloth to dry the interior and surface of the Dutch oven.

 

How to clean a cast iron Dutch oven?

1 Remove food residue. Use paper towels or a microfiber cloth to wipe away food residue from the inside and outside of the oven. If there is any food residue, it is recommended to use a plastic scraper to remove it. Avoid using metal scrapers or steel wool, which can damage the oven surface.

2 Clean the inside of the oven. Don’t soak it in the sink, cast iron will rust. Apply a few drops of dishwasher detergent to a sponge and wipe the inside of the oven.

3 After removing food residue and oil stains, rinse the oven with hot water immediately. Dry the Dutch oven with paper towels or a microfiber cloth. Do not air dry it as this will cause rust. Finally, place the Dutch oven on the stove and heat over medium heat for 10 minutes to remove any remaining water stains.

4 Pour 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil into the oven and wipe the surface with paper towels.

How to clean a stainless steel Dutch oven?

1 Fill the oven with hot water and add two pumps of dishwashing detergent. After stirring to create foam, let it sit for 20 minutes.

2 Use a sponge to clean the inside and outside of the Dutch oven. Finally rinse with clean water. Stainless steel is easy to clean, and it’s basically clean at this point.

3 You don’t have to worry about stubborn stains stuck to the pot. Pour 4 cups of water into the oven, add three tablespoons of baking soda and bring to a boil. After two minutes, clean the Dutch oven again.

4 Use a clean paper towel or soft cloth to dry the oven surface and make sure no moisture remains. Make sure the oven is completely dry before storing.
